UNICEF, the United Nations Children's Fund, was established in 1946 to meet
the emergency relief needs of the children of war-ravaged Europe and China.
Soon after fulfilling these needs, its mandate was broadened to focus on
development assistance for children and their families in the world's
poorest countries. Because UNICEF does not receive funds from the United
Nations, it depends entirely upon the voluntary contributions from
governments, UNICEF national committees, foundations, corporations, and
individuals to finance its works.
The U.S. Committee for UNICEF was created for educational and charitable
purposes to increase public awareness in the U.S. about the challenges
facing the world's children and to raise funds for UNICEF-assisted
projects. Founded in 1947, the U.S. Committee is the oldest and largest of
38 national committees for UNICEF around the world. In the last 49 years
the U.S. Committee has provided approximately $469 million to support
numerous UNICEF-assisted projects and programs.
Organized under the laws for New York State as a not-for-profit
corporation, the U.S. Committee is exempt from tax under Section 501(c)(3)
of the International Revenue Code and is governed by an independent,
non-salaried board of directors. Contributions to the U.S. Committee for
UNICEF qualify for the maximum charitable deduction by donors.
