'Haven't had a chance to read through the responses, yet...
But remember, perhaps the most significant difference between our
situation today, and Vietnam--
Is the absence of the draft.
The peace movement of the '60s would absolutely not have proceded with
its remarkable trajectory, without the imminent sense of personal peril
that so many Americans felt.
We have a PROFESSIONAL military, for a reason.
Which is why it's so extra tragic to see a campiagn hatched by
politicians, with such
mendacity. And to see it waged, with such incompetence.
And to see the soliders treated by Bush and his pals, so criminally.
Not well publicized, at all, is that the Iraqi War has the highest
incidence of ours soliders' suicides....
And many others, who need medical care, have been forced to wait, for
military medical facilities that aren't available.
Bush has betrayed not only the values of America, but these very troops,
of our sons and daughters.
As to the rest? Briefly?
If three of the Huns of Attilla came to the door of your kitchen, you
could bemoan many things: That you hadn't thwarted their journey, from
the beginning... That you hadn't made sure that Huns had been educated
in the their home nation, so that a generation later, they wouldn't be
so prone to murder... You could regret
not having bribed Hun leaders, or negotiated elsewise with them, before
they ever showed up at your door... You could regret tacitly having
accepted the exisence of Attilla, even though his rule was barbaric....
But if you don't somehow stop them, within moments, your head will be
rolling around your kichen's floor...
