Hey Katie.. I can't speak for your Woof, but I can remember trying out for two plays.. One, (Tommy) Inwhich I really wanted the title role, as I knew I could sing the shit out of the part. (Of course I was still a bit green in the whole theatre scene, so only knew the role by Roger Daltrys portrail of said charecter) They offered me Uncle Ernie. Uncle Ernie..The one role I swore I would not take if offered. (I had a real moral issue playing a child molester) I originally turned the role down, but was talked back into it when the director voiced her reasons as to why she needed me as Uncle Ernie. (1, that the people who auditioned were mostly younger than myself, so having Tommy be older than his folks wouldn't fly, and 2, and the main reason I did the part, They wanted my son as young Tommy, and this was only his third play.. So I did it. And though I knew each night that I could have nailed the Tommy songs, rocking them better than the guy doing the role. I did my job and h
ad a lot
of fun. (By the way one thing the director did for me, and for the production, was to give me a few more vocal parts. ie: A harmony in eyesght for the blind where the guy inging the main vocal couldn't hit the high notes. etc... this made it better for me. And the show was great... though I still felt it needed that rock n roll edge of a long hair projecting the Daltry screams, it wasn't my job as actor to cast or direct. And again in auditioning for Jekell and Hyde.. inwhich the same director told me a year earlier that she wanted me to play the title role.. so I picked up the CD and learned the part, only to find the same problem.. young cast.. so I ended up as Stride, after again originally turning the role down.. Again.. the reasons were told to me and I was given other tidbits in other ensemble songs. I'm a rock n roll singer who fell into acting through the love of the vocal lines of Jesus Christ Superstar. (which I did get the role I wnet out for.. Jesus) And though I
have
landed some great roles.. I don't really consider myself an actor.. I do alright at acting but I shine on another stage.I am sure that it's ego more than anything that is making your Woof long for the Claude role. But you've got to make him see the big picture.. and if he is good and you need other voices to beef up certain parts maybe offer them up to him. (Not that I myself wouldn't have done those roles had I not been given the tidbits, but it definetly helped me feel I was contributing all I could to the show.) Egos come in all sizes.. and no matter how hard we try to surpress them, it's human nature Anyway.. I bet he'll come around. Hell Hair is such a great experience and if the cast is tight in love and friendship, roles don't really matter, it's all about looking forward to getting everyone together and having fun.
Hope that helps.. JIM

Hey Katie... how about getting a few of the cast to tell Woof how great or special he is in that part (of course he should not know it was YOUR idea)... sort of like HE was meant to be Woof, which he probably was /is since you chose him to be such.... :-)
peace,
barbar

It seems to be an Asheville curse.
My stage manager just quit because she has to have surgery and the doctor
said she's not allowed to do another show...
But I looked at the I Ching yesterday, and when I asked, "what can I say to
motivate the cast and crew", it led me to "Calculated Waiting".
So cool really, it actually said, "Destiny is at work here", and basically
that we are all part of something bigger than ourselves.
I brought it to rehearsal and read it to the cast~ we have named ourselves
the Phoenix Tribe.
Before the Trail of Tears, the Cherokee newspaper was called "The Phoenix"
and this production seems to be re-born from ashes on a daily basis.

On a Directing note, my woof is still a little sulky at not playing Claude.
I've talked to him and am going to do more acting improv with the group~
but has anyone encountered this before...anything magic to help everyone
see the big picture?
Thank you!
Have a wonderful and beautiful day.
Peace,
Katie
