For those coming in who don't leave the next day,
September 11 has been a day of somber reflection for
much of the city.
The Ground Zero site will be closed to the public for
the reading-of-the-names for most of that day.
However, if you've never been to the site before,
you'll see nothing but a construction site with no
visible evidence of the tragedy.
But: If you can get to it, Fritz Koenig's massive
bronze sculpture "Sphere" which had always stood
center in the plaza of the World Trade Center, is now
placed as a monument, burned, battered and triumphant,
in Battery Park. To get there, just walk straight
down Church Street (the street at Ground Zero site) to
Battery Park. Make no turns, you'll walk straight to
it. It's worth a visit.
Also, another moving monument is across the river in
Jersey City, directly across the river from the Trade
Center site: three lengths of twisted girder from the
towers. To get there, take the PATH train from the
World Trade Center Statio one stop to Exchange Place.
Walk south along the waterfront for two or three
blocks, and you'll come upon it.
