Why this is news: This paper is the first to report that - in addition to its known effect in reducing the risk of heart attacks - moderate alcohol intake reduces the risk of the most common kind of strokes.
What the piece does NOT say (but should) is that drinking MORE than the recommended amount (no more than an average of two "standard drinks" a day for men 65 and younger - and no more than ONE standard drink a day (on average) for women and men over 65) actually INCREASES the risk of stroke rather dramatically. And also increases the risks of heart attacks, cancer and death by accidents and violence, not to mention liver disease...

PS: One standard drink is 10 grams of ethanol, which is roughly the amount of alcohol in 4 oz (120 ml) of wine, 12 oz of beer, or an ounce of distilled spirits...
