In calling for a repeal of the 22nd Amendment, which limits presidents to two terms, James MacGregor Burns and Susan Dunn suggest that the possibility of a bad president remaining in office would be checked by voters who would "repudiate a failed president at the polls" (Op-Ed, Jan. 5). I believe this is naive.
Given the debacle of the 2000 election, questions that remain about the 2004 election, the imminent national change-over to electronic voting - which recent news stories have indicated is far from accurate, and possibly even highly manipulatable - and the power of the often spin-driven, corporate-owned major media to determine what the public sees as the "truth" about possible executive branch chicanery, the repeal of the 22nd Amendment would go a long way to creating the atmosphere for a truly "imperial" presidency.
