Who is tuning in to CNN¹s Amanpour?


Is the scandal over the Bush administration¹s domestic spying about to get
even more scandalous?

During an interview this week with James Risen, the New York Times reporter
who broke the story, NBC¹s Andrea Mitchell asked whether he had any
information about journalists being spied upon.

Risen said he didn¹t. Then she asked whether he had any evidence that one
journalist in particular ­ CNN¹s Christiane Amanpour ­ ³might have been
eavesdropped upon².

Risen again said he didn¹t. But NBC later removed the Amanpour question from
a transcript of the exchange and, after bloggers picked up on the move, said
it had not yet completed its reporting on the matter.

The prospect of the Bush administration listening in on Amanpour is
interesting on many levels.

As CNN¹s chief international correspondent, she has worked all over the
world, including Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, Israel and  Pakistan.

But tapping her phones and computers might yield far more.

She also happens to be married to Jamie Rubin, who was a top aide to
Madeleine Albright, secretary of state during the Clinton years. More
recently, he worked on foreign policy issues for John Kerry¹s presidential
campaign.
