Grannies from hell 

New research from the Equal Opportunities Commission calculates how long it will be before women achieve parity with men in workplace seniority. It will take 20 years in the top ranks of the civil service, 40 years in FTSE 100 boardrooms and 200 years in parliament.

Notebook predicts that it will also be 20 years before the typical man can cook Sunday dinner without using every utensil in the kitchen, 40 years before he notices that a dishwasher needs emptying and 200 years before he changes a dirty nappy when he could get a woman to do it instead.

Women bear a disproportionate burden of domestic chores in households where both partners work, which cannot help their workplace performance. There is an entrenched assumption that childcare and housework are female activities. This leaves men with such light duties as car washing and football coaching.

The EOC is always keen to blame workplace inequality on prejudiced employers. It keeps jolly quiet about another culprit wielding even greater power: the mother-in-law. She packed in her job, as she never ceases to remark, when she had kids. She can make things hot for a daughter-in-law who works full time. “What my son really needs,” she observes acidly, surveying the bawling brats and unwashed pots characteristic of the dual income home, “is a wife.”
