GOVERNOR GENERAL RECALLS 'HARSH' 2005
WebPosted Sun Jan 1 13:21:59 2006
---In her first New Year's message, Gov. Gen. Michaëlle Jean praised
Canadians for helping victims of natural disasters around the world.
"This past year will be remembered for its harshness," she said,
recalling the Indian Ocean tsunami that struck southern Asia in late
2004, as well as the hurricanes that struck New Orleans and her native
Haiti in 2005.
She said Canadians rose to the challenge of helping others.
"It is often in the face of adversity that individuals must rise to
their full potential. We have done this. By the thousands, Canadians
eagerly and generously answered the cries for help from their fellow
human beings."
Jean also thanked everyone who offered their support during her first
months as Governor General.
She said the Canadians she has met on her travels all "dared to dream
big, determined to act for the greater good against violence, against
indifference, against exclusion, to respect others, to encourage
dialogue, to demand equal opportunity."
The Governor General paid homage to Armed Forces personnel and singled
out the First Nations veterans she accompanied to Normandy in October
for praise.
"They too answered the call of men and women they did not know, crossing
the ocean and sacrificing their youth and at times their very lives in
the name of freedom and justice."
