N.W.T. PARK EXPANDING
WebPosted Sun Jul 31 15:52:05 2005
---Tuktut Nogait National Park in the Northwest Territories, centred on
tundra where 100,000 caribou bear their young, will expand by 1,800
square kilometres on Monday.
Environment Minister Stephane Dion said Friday that he would sign an
"impact and benefit plan" for the completion of the park on Monday.
Tuktut Nogait, 170 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle, totals 16,340
square kilometres, the Parks Canada website says.
It's home to the Bluenose West caribou herd, wolves, grizzly bears, musk
oxen and many raptors.
The additional land will protect the calving ground of the Bluenose herd,
said Raymond Taniton, president of the Deline Land Corp. Acting for all
Sahtu Dene and Métis, the corporation reached a tentative deal with the
government in March.
Tuktut Nogait means caribou calves in the Siglik dialect of Inuvialuktun,
the western Arctic Inuit language.
The agreement allows Dene to hunt caribou in the park, and will create
economic benefits for the community.
A Sahtu Dene appointee will join the board that manages the park.
Ottawa plans for the park to continue growing, including into Nunavut,
but has yet to reach agreements with the Aboriginal groups.
Parts of the caribou grounds not in the park are protected by other
agreements.
