Nominee battle looms for court

O'Connor retires after 24 years

WASHINGTON -- Sandra Day O'Connor, a cattle rancher's daughter and 
former Arizona state senator who made history as the first woman on the 
US Supreme Court, stepped down as a justice yesterday, a resignation 
that reverberated through the nation's capital and signaled the start to 
what promises to be a brutal nomination fight over her successor.
