I fear that there are such huge vested interests at play here in keeping drugs illegal that it probably ain't going to happen outside small, sensible, liberal and, yes, ethical countries like Holland. In the US , you probably have far more accurate data than I do, I believe that the drugs trade turns over something like $100 bn pa in black money. It is an amazing slush fund to have access to and so many bogus careers are spawned from it all. We are all pissing into a hurricane on this one, however right we may be.

Robin:
Excellent work. Let me add a couple of things.
When I was dealing (yes, I was a bad boy once...) in the early to late 70s, all my dealer friends and i knew that there was a direct connection between U.S. military involvement overseas and the influx of drugs to the U.S. For example, when we first went into Afghanistan (long before the 80s), my friend predicted an influx of Afghani hash. Lo and behold, less than three weeks later, Afghani hash started coming in. When we went into Beirut (also pre-80s), he predicted an influx of Lebanese hash. Lo and beyold, within three weeks, there it was. When there was a brief "itchy" period in Thailand, we eagerly awaited the influx of Thai stick. It was not as big as we'd hoped for, but there it was just the same.
The reason for all this is really very simple. We provide arms and other support to these countries, but they do not have the money - cash - to cover all of these debts. So we trade arms for drugs. And we've been doing it for at least 30-40 years. This is why the Iran-Contra drug-money-arms scandal was no surprise to me or any of my dealer friends. Indeed, we were wondering why such a fuss was being made, when this was actually SOP for the military.
Also, re the war on drugs. One of the things the government complains about is the "porous" borders, and the inability to stop drugs from entering the U.S. Setting aside the fact that the government itself is in the drug business, and doesn't want to stop the flow, the complaint is an outright lie.
When I discussed this with a high-level career military friend of mine, he looked at me and laughed. He then asked me a question: "Ian - do you know where the National Guard is located throughout the U.S.?" I said I didn't know. "The vast majority of National Guard HQs are on the perimeter of the continental U.S. - near the borders. And do you know why? So that, in a true national security emergency, the borders can be 'shut down.' And when I say 'shut down,' I mean it: if the U.S. government really wanted to shut the borders - to stop the flow of drugs, or illegal immigration, or anything else - it would take less than 90 minutes to secure 95% of the border of the 48 contiguous states. Ninety minutes. And I know this because it's been tested."
Pretty powerful stuff, huh?
Finally, whenever I get into debates about the "dangers" of marijuana, I simply relate three facts that usually shut people up.
First, not one single person has ever died as a direct result of smoking marijuana, unless the marijuana was tainted with something else (e.g., PCP): i.e., no death certificate has ever been issued on which the cause of death was listed as "marijuana." Indeed, even were someone to find a few examples, they would still not equal even the number of people who die from snake bites or lightning. Consider also that deaths from cigarettes in the U.S. alone are about 500,000 per year, plus another 100,000 to 200,000 deaths from alcohol-related diseases. Yet alcohol and cigarettes are legal - and tobacco is actually subsidized by the government.
Second, the country of Jamaica, which has the largest per capita consumption of marijuana in the world, has one of the lowest lung cancer rates in the world. Yet China, which has one of the lowest per capita consumption rates in the world, has among the highest rates of lung cancer. Why? Tobacco. Can marijuana cause cancer? Possibly, since any foreign substance in the lungs has that capacity. But no causal link has ever been found.
Third, marijuana has proven positive, effective medical uses (as you point out), including for glaucoma, cancer (to ease the after-effects of chemo- and radiation therapy) and AIDS (to ease the effects of various drug therapies, as well as to stimulate the appetite). And, as you also point out, marijuana may have many other positive medical uses, which we simply do not know because the government refuses to study it properly.
These three facts speak volumes more than all the conjecture and paranoia of anti-drug groups. Indeed, I have always felt that, if the anti-drug groups would separate out marijuana from "drugs," and focus on the truly dangerous drugs like heroin, cocaine, MDMA, etc., then they would stop alienating a great number of potential new supporters - people who smoke marijuana but have serious reservations about (or are outright against) "drugs."
Peace.

Al Barka & All
I couldn't agree more about maijuana. Most drugs like heroin and cocaine, speed, alcohol, nicotine and most prescription drugs, will wind up either doing damage to you or even kill you if you are not careful. Don't get me wrong; I said "most" presciption drugs because there are some wonderful drugs that do save lives like the AIDS cocktail combination, but the percentage of good prescription drugs is miniscule compared to the bad ones; most of the pills prescribed today are garbage. We live in a culture that says take a pill for this ailment or that ailment and all will be better. The drug companies have most of us convinced through advertising that that is the way to go. It's all a bunch of bullshit. Now, when it comes to marijuana that is a different story - no one has ever died from it. The medical profession and drug companies are afraid of it because not only can anyone grow it but they can't figure out why it works for so many ailments because of their refusal to study it properly, so they keep feeding us garbage information on how bad it is for you. Marijuana is a wonderful thing because not only does it enhance your physical and mental well-being and relieve the suffering from cancer, AIDS and glaucoma, but also it has many other indications where it works. "The Herb Book," the Bible of all herbs, written by John Lust with contributions by many other people including many doctors, says that "Although the current interest in cannabis centers on its euphorigenic properties, the plant has in the past also shown much promise as a medicinal agent. uses includes: analgesic-hypnotic, topical anesthetic, antiasthmatic, antibiotic, antiepileptic and antispasmodic, antidepressant and tranquilizer, antitussive, appetite stimulant, oxytocic, preventive and anodyne for neuralgia (including migraine), aid to psychotherapy, and agent to ease withdrawal from alcohol and opiates. Restrictions placed on cannabis in the U.S. since 1937 have practically eliminated its use as a medicinal agent, and even research into its properties was practically nonexistent until the last few years. Its medical history suggests that cannabis has only low toxicity (no confirmed deaths have been attributed to cannabis poisoning)...."
Alan Ginsberg said that pot was the catalyst of the 60's hippie movement; it made the hippies more aware to not be afraid to protest and take on government. Also, the late and well-respected astronomer and author Carl Sagan. who wrote many scientific books, i.e. The Cosmos, said that pot gave him insight. He was a secret but avid marijuana smoker, crediting it with inspiring essays and scientific insight, according to Sagan's biographer Keay Davidson. Using the pseudonym "Mr. X", Sagan wrote about his pot smoking in an essay published in the 1971 book Reconsidering Marijuana. In the essay, Sagan said marijuana inspired some of his intellectual work.
Also the war on drugs is a sham; we will spend 25 billion dollars this year and more every year after that to send to some of the most corrupt countries on earth like Columbia who could really give a shit about helping us police our bad habits. There is no truth that when you legalize and regulate drugs, it causes more crime and addiction; other countries that have done it hold the proof. In this country we are so pious, yet we consume 60% of the world's cocaine. If the gonvernment would legalize, educate, and treat, then through taxation they would make billions, especially with marijauna, and be able to fund educational and treatment centers and still have billions left over for other things instead of spending your tax dollars on a never-ending saga of bullshit.
Peace
Robin

Good stuff, that (marijuana, maconha, yerba, falopa, mercaderia etc). A friend of mine here jumped out of aeroplane three years ago with a parachute strapped securely to his back but it didn't open. Result: 2 legs smashed to smithereens, infected bones etc but miraculously still alive. In the US or EU they would have amputated them immediately but here they like a challenge and they have been trying to piece them back together. He has had chronic, excruciating pain for the past three years a 61 operations under general anaesthetic. The only thing that brings relief is smoking the maconha leaf. I do not know if he had been smoking it before he jumped but in any case if any of you needed a testimonial as the medical benefits of Don Ricardo's habit I will get my friend to post it on this board.
