Re the Vatican and its ostentation, I might add that it has among the world's largest private collections of artworks by major pre-Renaissance and Renaissance artists - a very small percentage of which is viewable by the public.
If the Vatican sold even 1/4 of its collection, it could raise enough money to feed every hungry person in the world for a year.
Put that in your pipe and smoke it...

dear Max In The Age of Kali only Ratzinger could have been elected Pope. I was not surprised at all. I had hope that the Pope would have been from Brazil but knew beforhand that he could not be as we are living in an age of terrible events that will not abate. I find the ostenation of the Vatican to be a symbol of wealth and power used in a tasteless, thoughtless and uncharitable manner unbefitting to a major world religion. I did not watch the proceedings.
Freedom.....you made several excellent points......however, you will concur that there are numerous societies worldwide that do not wish to have "freedom" incorporated into their lifestyles. The concept of "freedom" is from Western Civilization and especially North American USA value system. Imposing American standards of freedom on other world societies is a form of controlling power and an imposition on cherished beliefs and customs of the people. Furthermore, I find it ludicrous, as an American, to observe American politicians attempt to impose"freedom" beyond our borders when a classic example of how little "freedom" exists in the US when ballot machines are rigged, blacks are discouraged from voting, women are denied abortions, and people cannot choose to die with dignity. xxoo Belle
