Who needs a gun? Or heck, even a reason?

How truly sad...

Peace.

Quarrel Over a Boy Ends in Death When Girl, 16, Stabs Another, 15

October 12, 2004
 By MICHELLE O'DONNELL

A fight between two teenage Queens girls over a boy turned
deadly yesterday, when one of them stabbed the other in the
chest with a six-inch dagger, the authorities said.

The fight began outside the Latimer Gardens public housing
complex in Flushing at 34-45 Linden Place at about 5:45
p.m., the police said. The two girls, ages 15 and 16, were
arguing over a boy who had once dated the 15-year-old and
was currently dating the 16-year-old, a law enforcement
official said.

Suddenly, the 15-year-old, Frances Hynds, reached out and
slashed the 16-year-old in the face with a razorlike
implement, the police said.

The injured 16-year-old was handed a dagger by a female
friend, also 16, who was standing nearby. The 16-year-old
then plunged the dagger into Frances's chest. She collapsed
on the pavement, the police said.

William Leake, 34, said he was visiting his mother in her
second-floor apartment when he heard a voice from the
street say, "She shouldn't have done it." Mr. Leake went to
window and saw a group of teenagers below. Then he saw the
girl lying on the ground bleeding from her mouth and nose.
A passer-by held her head and comforted her, he said.

Frances was taken to New York Hospital Medical Center of
Queens where she was pronounced dead. The 16-year-old was
also taken to the same hospital where she was listed in
stable condition.

Her friend was taken into custody for questioning by
detectives in the 109th Precinct, the police said. A
spokesman for Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said
that the investigation was continuing and that no decision
had been reached about charges.

The police were reviewing the tape from a surveillance
camera at the Flushing Motel across the street, which might
have captured the fight.

Mr. Leake said he was stunned by the stabbing. "Kids fight,
but not like this," he said. "Maybe it wouldn't shock me if
it were boys. But girls, yeah."

Janon Fisher contributed reporting for this article.
