Return Engagement Behind Prison Bars
The New York Times
November 28, 2004

It has been a long second act. In the 1960's and 70's, Adela Holzer was
well known on Broadway as a producer and an investor in shows that included
the hit rock musical "Hair." Then, in 1979, she was found to have started a
second career; she was convicted of defrauding investors of nearly $100,000
in bogus schemes not involving the theater, and she served two years in
prison. In 1990, she pleaded guilty to stealing more than $400,000 in
another investment swindle and served four more years. Two years ago, she
was convicted of bilking illegal immigrants of more than $200,000 in yet
another scheme, in which she falsely
promised them documents that would give them legal status. These days, Ms.
Holzer, 75, is serving 9 to 18 years for that crime at the Albion
Correctional Facility in western New York, where she works in the prison
library, said a spokeswoman for the state prison system.
